Honours Project
The Honours Project, undertaken in the final year, is an independent research or translation project and can be regarded as the culmination of the BA Programme. Project tasks are selected in such a way that they bring together the knowledge and skills acquired by students up to that point in their educational and professional development. Students may choose to produce an extended piece of translation, with accompanying critical introduction, or alternatively may opt to write a dissertation on a research topic of their choice in the fields of translation, interpreting or intercultural studies.

In the case of an extended translation, a text, generally between 10,000 and 12,000 words/characters in the source language, will be translated from English into Chinese or from Chinese into English. The Department also has expertise in a range of other languages, and can accomodate students who wish to work in other language pairs. Along with the translation, students submit an introductory essay, which gives the rationale for the selection of the text for translation, and provides an analysis of the source text as well as a discussion of the problems encountered during the process of translating, and the approaches and strategies used for dealing with these problems. The length of the essay is approximately 3,000 words/characters.

Close supervision is provided for each project, with supervisors discussing and editing parts of the work. Supervisors monitor the progress of all project work as it is being performed on a regular basis.

The Prof. Jane Lai Prize, a scholarship established from donations by a group of staff members in honour of Professor Jane Lai, provides an annual sum of HK$2,000 to the Translation student who produces the best Honours Project in a given year.
