Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme
The PhD is a 4-year Programme, comprising the following:
- A minimum of 22 units of coursework, including:

- The University’s Mandatory Common Core Programme (“MCCP”) (3 units)
- Mandatory course on research methods (3 units)
- Research Seminars (4 units)
- Four courses related to the student’s chosen field (12 units)
One of these four courses is compulsory for all new TIIS RPg students:
TRA 7510 Required Readings in Translation Studies
- An overseas attachment of between 1 and 6 months at another institution, or an agreed equivalent (e.g. industry placement in the case of Translation Technology-related projects.)
- A qualifying examination at the end of the first 18 months of study, involving a written paper on readings covered, a research prospectus, plus seminar presentation of research progress to date.
- A candidature confirmation after 30 months of study, involving the presentation of two draft chapters of the candidate’s thesis, and a seminar presentation.
- Final presentation of a final thesis of not more than 60,000 words.
Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Programme
The MPhil is a 2-year Programme, comprising the following:
- A minimum of 12 units of coursework, including:

- The University’s Mandatory Common Core Programme (“MCCP”) (3 units)
- Three courses related to the student’s chosen field (9 units)
One of these three courses is compulsory for all new TIIS RPg students:
TRA 7510 Required Readings in Translation Studies
- A candidature confirmation after 12 months of study, involving the submission of a research prospectus, and a seminar presentation.
- Final presentation of a final thesis of not more than 60,000 words.
